This position may be performed remotely anywhere within the United States except for the State of Alaska, North Dakota, or South Dakota. Employees located within 50 miles of a BHN office will be considered a "Hybrid" employee and are required to come into the office 2 days per week based on office schedule.

Overview

We are seeking a Senior Software Engineer to join Blackhawk Network's Core Services team, responsible for building and evolving the enterprise platform that powers a high volume, fault tolerant, and scalable global content management system. As a key individual contributor, you will design, develop, and deliver high quality, scalable software solutions across the full software development lifecycle, from architecture and implementation through testing, deployment, and production support. You will collaborate with Product, Architecture, and cross functional engineering teams to design and build reliable, cloud native solutions that power critical business capabilities across Blackhawk's global coreservice ecosystem.

The ideal candidate is a hands on software engineer with strong experience developing cloud native applications using Java, Spring Boot, AWS, React/Angular, and MySQL. You should have a passion for building scalable APIs, distributed systems, and intuitive user experiences, while driving technical solutions from design through production deployment.

Our platform serves as the foundation for core business capabilities, including API services, enterprise integrations, domain modeling, workflow automation, monitoring, AI recommendations and operational tooling. Success in this role requires strong technical expertise, sound engineering judgment, and a high level of ownership to deliver scalable, high quality solutions in a fast paced Agile environment.

Responsibilities

Design, develop, and enhance full stack capabilities across the Core Services ecosystem, including Angular based user interfaces, Java microservices, APIs, and shared platform components.

Deliver complex features end-to-end, from solution design and implementation through testing, deployment, and production readiness.

Build scalable, secure, resilient, and maintainable software that supports high volume business workflows and enterprise integrations.

Design, develop, and maintain RESTful APIs, microservices, and event driven integrations that connect with upstream and downstream enterprise platforms.

Collaborate closely with Product Managers, Architects, UX, DevOps, and cross functional engineering teams to translate business requirements into scalable technical solutions.

Lead technical design discussions and contribute to architecture decisions for new platform capabilities and enhancements.

Develop responsive, accessible, and intuitive user interfaces, ensuring a high quality user experience across web applications.

Integrate front end applications with backend services, REST APIs, messaging systems, and third party platforms.

Build and maintain CI/CD pipelines, infrastructure automation, and deployment processes to improve engineering efficiency and release quality.

Continuously improve application performance, scalability, reliability, security, and observability through monitoring, logging, and performance tuning.

Perform code reviews, promote engineering best practices, and mentor junior engineers through technical guidance and collaborative problem solving.

Write and maintain automated unit, integration, and end-to-end tests to ensure software quality and reliability.

Participate in Agile ceremonies, including sprint planning, backlog refinement, daily stand ups, demos, and retrospectives.

Partner with Operations and Support teams to ensure successful production deployments, issue triage, incident resolution, and smooth post-release handoffs.

Drive continuous improvement by identifying opportunities to simplify architecture, automate workflows, and enhance the overall developer and platform experience.

Qualifications

2+ years of software development experience building enterprise applications, distributed systems, and scalable cloud-based solutions.

Strong hands on experience with Java (JDK 11+), Spring Boot, object-oriented design, and microservices architecture.

Experience building modern web applications using Angular, React, or similar frontend frameworks.

Strong understanding of REST APIs, service integrations, API design patterns, and distributed systems.

Experience with relational databases (MySQL/AWS RDS, Aurora) and NoSQL technologies (MongoDB).

Hands-on experience developing and deploying applications in AWS cloud environments (EKS, Aurora, RDS, EC2, Kinesis, Lambda, API Gateway, or similar services).

Experience with CI/CD pipelines and development tools such as Git, Maven, Gradle, and Jenkins.

Strong problem solving skills with the ability to design scalable solutions and independently drive complex technical initiatives.

Experience designing and building systems with considerations for fault tolerance, self healing, reliability, scalability, performance, and security.

Excellent communication skills with experience collaborating across Product, Architecture, Engineering, and Operations teams.

Experience working in an Agile/Scrum environment with a focus on engineering excellence and continuous improvement.

Salary Range for all U.S.

Residents (excluding Alaska, California, North Dakota, South Dakota)

$95,550.00 to $128,997.00

Salary Range for California Residents Only

$121,070.00 to $163,457.00
