Position summary - primary purpose of the role

Owns the reliability, release and operational control of the BIDS trading platform across production environments in the United States, Canada and Europe. Accountable for production deployment, incident response, disaster recovery, and the regulatory control framework that governs the operation of an alternative trading system. Leads a team spanning site reliability engineering and database administration and directs the continued evolution of hybrid of on-premises and AWS environments.

The role is deliberately hands-on

the incumbent both leads the function and personally executes or supervises production change.

Role Overview

BIDS Trading operates an alternative trading system for institutional block equity trading, with production environments across the United States, Canada and Europe. We are looking for a Director of Production Operations to own the reliability, release and operational control of that platform - a hands-on leadership role accountable for everything from production deployment and incident response to the regulatory control framework that governs an ATS.

You will lead a small, senior team spanning site reliability engineering and database administration, and you will work across environments that are deliberately hybrid: the on-premises environments that carry regulated trading activity, alongside a growing AWS footprint you will help shape and extend. This is a chance to take ownership of a platform that genuinely matters, with real room to modernize how it is run rather than inherit someone else's blueprint.

Your responsibilities will be

  • Lead production release and change management. Own the end-to-end release process for the BIDS trading platform across North American and European production environments - planning, execution, verification and rollback - and chair the weekly change management forum that governs it.
  • Own the operational and regulatory control framework. Maintain the control calendar governing BIDS operations - daily through annual reviews spanning database auditing, privileged access, capacity and market conduct - and ensure each control is performed, evidenced and reviewed on schedule.
  • Lead and develop the production operations team. Manage a team spanning site reliability engineering and database administration and coordinate with the software engineering and infrastructure teams. Set priorities across both specializations and build enough depth that no critical process depends on any one person. You will set the direction for and review the work of the database administration function rather than performing it.
  • Operate and evolve a hybrid production environment. Run the on-premises environments that carry regulated trading activity alongside a growing AWS footprint, applying consistent release, monitoring and control practices across both. Lead the continued migration of workloads to cloud where it reduces risk or cost, without compromising availability of the on-premises platform.
  • Direct the technical response to production incidents. Coordinate diagnosis and recovery during production events, run the alert triage issues across all production environments, and own post-incident review and remediation. Client-impacting and business decisions escalate to the chief operating officer.
  • Own resilience and disaster recovery. Plan and lead quarterly and annual disaster recovery site tests, verify backup and restore procedures, and keep recovery runbooks current and executable.
  • Keep the platform current. Design and schedule upgrade programs across the runtime, database and infrastructure layers, coordinating change windows with infrastructure, network and vendor teams to land them without disrupting trading.

The ideal candidate has

  • 10+ years in production operations, technical operations or release engineering, in financial services or another regulated environment.
  • 5+ years leading technical teams.
  • A bachelor's degree in a technical discipline, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Linux / UNIX administration and shell scripting
  • Enterprise RDBMS operations - Oracle strongly preferred
  • SQL
  • Production incident management and post-incident review
  • AWS infrastructure and services in a production context
  • Infrastructure as code - Terraform preferred
  • Monitoring and log analytics - Splunk, Grafana or equivalent
  • JVM application platforms, including runtime and garbage collection tuning
  • Operating a hybrid on-premises and cloud environment
  • Secrets management - HashiCorp Vault or equivalent

Preferred.

  • Experience at an alternative trading system, exchange or broker-dealer.
