Java Software Engineer Specialist - Design Lead

Make your mark at one of the biggest names in payments. We’re looking for a hands-on Design Lead to drive elegant, simple designs that enable rapid integrations with Alternative Payment Method (APM) provider APIs and deliver end-to-end capabilities for new non-card payment products.

What you'll own

You will lead design within a cross-functional team, translating business needs into scalable, secure, and maintainable Java microservices and integration flows, optimizing for speed-to-integration, product agility, and operational excellence.

Own team-level design

• Define clear, minimal, and stable service and integration boundaries to onboard new APM providers quickly.
• Lead designs for merchant-facing solutions; ensure backward-compatible evolution and alignment with architectural rails.
• Choose simple, proven patterns over complexity; document concise HLD and LLD focusing on essential decisions and trade-offs.

Enable rapid APM integrations

• Create reusable integration templates and accelerators for APM onboarding (authentication, routing, mapping, error handling, webhooks and notifications).
• Standardize provider payload mapping and transformations (JOLT, JEXL) and govern design patterns for consistency across APMs.
• Embed resilience patterns and idempotency for retries, timeouts, and callback handling.

Accelerate delivery and continuous improvement

• Remove bottlenecks in the delivery flow; measure and improve lead time for changes, deployment frequency, and change failure rate.
• Facilitate and initiate experiments, and enable engineering continuous improvement; codify learnings into standards, templates, and playbooks.

Build quality and automation in

• Establish a pragmatic test strategy: unit (JUnit 5 and 6), mutation (PIT), containerized integration, contract (Pact), acceptance (Cucumber, WireMock), and performance (JMeter).
• Drive CI/CD excellence, using immutable stage-to-production image promotion and quality gates.
• Leverage GitHub, Dependabot, and GitHub Copilot to accelerate safe changes and reduce toil; codify standards via reusable pipelines and PR templates.

Operability by design

• Instrument services with OpenTelemetry; deliver actionable Splunk dashboards and xMatters alerts aligned to SLOs and SLIs.
• Optimize deployments (readiness, liveness, autoscaling, resource limits) and ensure smooth rollouts and quick rollback paths.

Cross-functional leadership

• Collaborate with Product, Engineering, QA, SRE/Platform, Security, Compliance, and Commercial/Partner teams to shape roadmaps and integration plans.
• Lead design and code reviews; mentor engineers on design thinking, clean code, and refactoring; support knowledge transfer across locations.

What you'll bring

• 8 to 12 years of software engineering experience with 2 to 4 years in a team, tech lead, or design lead role;
• Strong Java and Spring Boot expertise; proven delivery of microservices and third-party API integrations in production;
• Experience integrating with provider APIs, preferably payments/APMs, including authentication flows, webhooks, and error models;
• Hands-on CI/CD, DevOps, and containerization (Kubernetes and OpenShift); solid grasp of secure coding and OWASP practices;
• Excellent collaboration and communication skills; experience working in cross-functional teams and Agile environments;
• Mindset focused on accelerating delivery and leading and supporting continuous improvement of engineering.
