Field Service Technician I
North American Substation Services (NASS) is a national leader in transformer services and high‑voltage substation installation, maintenance, testing, and repair. Our teams support the full lifecycle of substation and transformer assets, including installation, maintenance, major repairs, and diagnostic testing.
Core services include transformer assembly, oil processing, regasket and life‑extension work, substation apparatus testing, and high‑voltage equipment maintenance to ensure safe, reliable system performance. We work on a wide range of substation equipment—power transformers, breakers, switches, arresters, and control cabinets—and perform essential diagnostics such as TTR, winding resistance, insulation resistance, power‑factor testing, and oil analysis through our dedicated in‑house laboratory. With a nationwide fleet of mobile oil‑processing units, we provide rapid on‑site support backed by strong technical expertise, a commitment to safety, and disciplined field execution to keep critical power systems operating reliably and efficiently.

Pay
The hourly rate for this position is between $25-32 per hour. Factors which may affect starting pay within this range may include geography/market, skills, education, experience, and other qualifications of the successful candidate.
Position Overview
The Field Service Technician I supports the field team with the assembly, installation, maintenance, and repair of power transformers and highvoltage substation equipment. This entrylevel role focuses on safe work practices while assisting experienced technicians with transformer assembly, oilprocessing support, and basic mechanical and electrical field duties.
Responsibilities
- Follow all company safety policies, procedures, and PPE requirements.
- Participate in safety meetings, training sessions, and jobsite briefings.
- Identify, report, and help mitigate potential safety hazards.
- Assist with assembly, installation, and setup of power transformers, including alignment and mechanical connections.
- Learn and apply correct bolting, wiring, torquing, and fastening techniques.
- Safely handle, move, and transport tools, materials, and field equipment.
- Support senior technicians with basic troubleshooting, maintenance, and repair of transformer and substation apparatus.
- Learn to recognize and help replace components such as bushings, gaskets, and basic hardware.
- Communicate effectively with supervisors and team members to ensure accurate and efficient field operations.
Qualifications
Preferred
- CDL or the interest/ability to obtain one
- NCCCO crane certification or experience with rigging and lifting operations
- Foundational mechanical aptitude and understanding of safe work practices
- Familiarity with transformer/substation hazards (LOTO, grounding, arc-flash)
- Ability to learn to read electrical diagrams, onelines, and basic metering devices
- Interest in learning transformer assembly, oilprocessing support, gasket/bushing work, and inspections
Work Environment & Physical Requirements
- Outdoor field role with exposure to weather, energized equipment zones, and industrial environments
- Travel by vehicle and air; overnight stays required
