AECOM is seeking a creative, talented Sr. Technical Designer to be based in our Washington, DC office.
This position is expected to begin as soon as possible.
At AECOM, Senior Technical Designers play a critical role in translating design concepts into high-quality, technically sound environments that have a meaningful impact on people and communities. Working across complex interior design projects, Senior Technical Designers collaborate with architects, designers, engineers, consultants, and project leadership to develop and deliver innovative solutions from concept through construction.
This role offers the opportunity to apply advanced technical expertise, industry best practices, and emerging technologies to challenging projects within a globally recognized firm. Senior Technical Designers contribute to the development of documentation, detailing, materials, specifications, and technical solutions while helping ensure design intent, quality, coordination, and constructability are maintained throughout project delivery.
In addition to providing technical leadership, Senior Technical Designers mentor and support developing team members, share knowledge, and help advance technical standards and processes. AECOM’s Buildings + Places business line is dedicated to design excellence and integrated project delivery solutions with expertise including architecture, interiors, engineering, development, workplace strategy, economic planning, master planning, project management, and construction services. We interface and collaborate with our Transportation, Water, Environment and Advisory business lines. Our B+P Washington DC studio is a dynamic, energetic environment that provides industry-leading design projects in aviation, government, higher education and corporate commercial markets.
Key Responsibilities include, but are not limited to
- Lead the development and coordination of technical design solutions from schematic design through construction documentation and implementation.
- Translate design concepts and project requirements into thoughtful, technically sound, and constructible interior environments.
- Develop and oversee space planning, test fits, programming diagrams, plans, elevations, details, and 3D models in coordination with the project team.
- Develop and maintain comprehensive construction documentation, ensuring accuracy, consistency, design intent, and alignment with applicable codes and standards.
- Coordinate interior design documentation with architectural, MEP/FP, structural, technology, and other project disciplines.
- Review, identify potential coordination issues, and perform quality assurance/quality control reviews throughout project delivery.
- Prepare technical presentations, diagrams, and other visual materials to effectively communicate design and technical solutions to clients and project stakeholders.
- Participate in design reviews, client meetings, interdisciplinary coordination meetings, construction administration activities, and site visits as appropriate.
- Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior designers and team members, sharing knowledge of documentation standards, workflows, finishes, and best practices.
- Contribute to the development and implementation of project standards, and innovative technical solutions that improve quality, efficiency, and project outcomes.
- Support project leadership in maintaining project schedules, budgets, deliverables, and overall quality while proactively identifying and resolving technical challenges.
Minimum Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Interior Design or Architecture degree with a minimum of six (6) years of experience in the field of Interior Design or demonstrated equivalency of experience and/or education.
- Due to the nature of work, U.S. Citizenship is required for this position.
- Demonstrated proficiency with Revit and/or AutoCAD, Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop), and Microsoft Office Suite.
Preferred Qualifications
- Licenses, and/or certifications preferred: National Council of Architectural Review Boards (NCARB), and/or National Council for Interior Design Qualification (NCIDQ)
- Portfolio submission required to demonstrate skill set.
- Ten (10) years + of experience preferred.
- Clearance is preferred. This role may require a clearance in the future, due to the nature of the role.
- Master's degree in Architecture or Interior Design.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office and Adobe Creative Suite programs (InDesign, Illustrator and Photoshop).
- Proficient in the application of color, materials, and aesthetic form.
- Proficient with space planning methodology.
- Proficient with contract interiors FF&E market including manufacturers and dealers, and basic experience documenting FF&E specifications
- Experience with of CDs and procedures, including MEP coordination and interior detailing.
- Accountable to meet deadlines.
- Strong communication, interpersonal, and collaborative skills fostering a positive work environment.
- Is collaborative and problem-solving, has a positive outlook, and is adaptable to new procedures, priorities, standards, technologies.
- Comfortable utilizing and learning new skills with digital project tools, including AI.
- Relocation assistance is not available.
- Sponsorship for US employment authorization is not available now or in the future for this position.
- This position requires a hybrid work schedule which includes office work in the Washington DC office. The selected candidate must be available to work in Washington, DC on a scheduled basis.
