Overview

Handshake is seeking experienced Software Engineers residing in UK and EU to support AI research through flexible, hourly contract work. This is not a traditional full-time SWE role. You’ll use your real-world software development experience to evaluate AI-generated code and technical content, provide structured feedback, and help improve how AI understands programming tasks, system design, and engineering best practices.

What is Handshake AI?Handshake AI is a paid, project-based fellowship program that connects students and professionals with leading AI labs. Fellows complete tasks — like evaluating AI responses, rating model outputs, and refining prompts — that directly help improve how AI systems think and perform. Work is fully remote and flexible, with no set schedules or minimum hour requirements.

Who is Handshake AI for?Handshake AI is open to current students, recent graduates, and professionals interested in flexible, project-based AI work. No prior AI experience is required — what matters most is your background, subject-matter knowledge, and attention to detail. Applicants must be US-based with valid work authorization. International students on F-1 CPT or OPT may be eligible, though eligibility can vary by project and visa type.

Is Handshake AI a full-time opportunity?No — Handshake AI is a flexible, project-based fellowship, not a full-time job. There are no guaranteed hours and no set schedules. Work availability fluctuates based on the needs of our partner labs, and you contribute as much or as little as your schedule allows. Many fellows fit it around school, a full-time job, or other commitments.

How will I be compensated?All work on Handshake AI is paid. Pay rates vary by project based on the type of work and level of expertise required, ranging from $17/hr to $150+/hr. You'll be able to review the pay rate for any project before committing to it. Once you're an active fellow, you can also earn additional income by referring others to the program.
