A Day in The Life Of
The Patient Care Systems portfolio develops and delivers connected technologies, data platforms, and interoperability capabilities that support clinical workflows and patient care across healthcare settings. The Data Architecture function enables scalable, secure, and compliant data solutions that support product innovation, clinical data exchange, analytics, and regulatory requirements across a complex healthcare ecosystem.
As a Senior Principal Data Architect, you will provide technical leadership for enterprise-scale healthcare data platforms, interoperability solutions, and data architecture strategy within the Patient Care Systems ecosystem. You will collaborate across product, engineering, architecture, security, privacy, and regulatory teams to define and deliver scalable data capabilities that enable clinical data exchange, analytics, and digital health solutions while maintaining alignment with business objectives and architectural standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Work with the Platform Data Architect to enable architectural vision, design, and technology choices for the data solutions in the Patient Care Systems ecosystem.
- Work with the Product Manager to define aspects of user story acceptance criteria and the prioritization of the Architecture Runway.
- Provide well-informed recommendations with multiple options using POCs and other means of establishing validated learning in critical aspects of architecture and design.
- Identify and document technical risks/debt and strategies for mitigation.
- Gain support and approval for architecture and design; this often involves collaboration with corporate security entities and platform teams.
- Deliver and maintain architecture documents and presentations needed for review and team guidance
- Accountable for technical viability of quality solutions that work with the given cost, scope, and schedule while maximizing progress toward the vision and balancing technical debt.
- Collaborate with Product Owners, HFUX, Systems Engineers, Architects, and peers to define solutions to market requirements.
- Work with other teams in the formulation and review of their work, providing critical thinking and additional options that improve the work of the wider team.
- Work with Product Leaders to define vision by providing a voice of technical possibility, feasibility, and sequencing options.
- Collaborate with Privacy, Security and Regulatory entities regarding the technical impact of emerging and existing legislation with data implications (e.g. EU Data Act, GDPR, HIPAA)
- Analyze and define internal and external customer requirements and mapping rules for clinical data exchange through a variety of data acquisition channels
- Collaborate with offshore and onsite development and build quality products supporting Agile activities ensuring deliverables meet both quality and performance standards
- Participate in Agile grooming, planning, retrospectives, design reviews and user acceptance
- Identify ways to transform & enrich data to enhance the business value of the data by implementing approaches to meet the business needs, while leveraging reusable and scalable solutions
- Build and advance collaborative relationships with business partners, product managers and IT partners
- Stay current on latest technologies, evolving HL7 standards and changes
- Strive to be a thought leader and advanced practitioner in data integration and interoperability
Delivery
- Demonstrate strong communication and customer management skills
- Serve as a technical evangelist regarding data platform capabilities.
- Bring a clear data influence on the culture, patterns, practices, and tooling of software delivery with Agile and DevOps foundations.
- Engages with the persistent teams through Agile/Scrum ceremonies including and Scrum planning, stand ups, sprint reviews, and retrospectives as appropriate
- Engages with the larger data architecture team to ensure alignment across the Patient Care Systems ecosystem of hardware and software
- Enforces the use of patterns, practices, and standards that enable teams to work more independently.
- Balances data with cost and capability assessments to support experiences designed
- Works with persistent teams to adapt the design based on early sprints and other learnings
- Guides the teams in leveraging established standards, patterns, and practices for delivery
- Accountable for delivery of features into production
Responsibilities may also include the following
- Design, develop, document, test, maintain, and debug applications software and systems that contain logical and mathematical solutions
- Conduct multidisciplinary research and collaborate with equipment designers and/or hardware engineers in the planning, design, development, and utilization of electronic data processing systems for product and commercial software.
- Determine computer user needs; analyzes system capabilities to resolve problems on program intent, output requirements, input data acquisition, programming techniques and controls; prepares operating instructions; designs and develops compilers and assemblers, utility programs, and operating systems.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Information Technology, or related technical discipline and 15+ years of relevant experience in software, data, or platform architecture; or Master's degree and 13+ years of relevant experience.
- Experience in troubleshooting issues with data sets, formatting and coding
- Experience with relational database management systems, big data solutions and distributed computing frameworks
- Strong knowledge of platform as a service offering, as well as best practices regarding instantiation and configuration
- Advanced knowledge of data streaming, batch and transformation
- Ability to translate business processes/requirements into functional specifications/documents
- Solid group communication skills including fluency in the languages of business and technology
- Demonstrated expertise in software development life cycle methodologies including Waterfall and Agile
- Cloud experience, preferably AWS
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience architecting healthcare data platforms utilizing HL7, Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources (FHIR), Clinical Document Architecture (CDA), Continuity of Care Document (CCD), or related interoperability standards.
- HL7 or FHIR certification.
- Experience in Clinical data analysis and data mapping
- Experience writing interfaces
- Experience leading integration architecture solutions and/or enterprise architecture for data intensive, scalable, high throughput platforms and applications leveraging knowledge of event-based messaging and notification, Online Transaction Processing (OLTP) and Online Analytical Processing (OLAP) systems and engineering best practices
- Knowledge of HIPAA Security, Privacy, and PHI/PII concerns
- Knowledge of industry standard patterns, practices and technologies including middleware, messaging types, microservices and containers, Cloud, message streaming, RESTful and web services APIs, and Big Data
