Wellabe is looking for a Software Engineer 3 to join our team. This role is responsible for creating and modifying complex software solutions and identifying and solving business and technical problems by designing, analyzing, testing, implementing, and troubleshooting applications throughout the software development lifecycle. This role provides technical leadership, contributes to architectural decisions, mentors team members, and leverages cloud-native platforms, AI technologies including AI-assisted development capabilities, automation, and modern software engineering practices to deliver secure, scalable, and maintainable solutions.

Core Responsibilities

  • Develop cost-effective solutions and enhancements for existing or new complex software applications, services, and processes by analyzing business and technical requirements, investigating problem areas, and implementing effective solutions.
  • Support the software development lifecycle by monitoring and reviewing system performance; coding, testing, debugging, documenting, leading code reviews; and implementing complex software applications and change management processes according to department standards.
  • Assist and/or lead DevOps practices by contributing to complex designs, prototypes, automation initiatives, and other development methodologies, including the development and implementation of test plans, deployment strategies, and program specifications.
  • Collaborate with product owners, software engineers, system engineers, architects, and testers to identify and analyze business requirements, reduce technical debt, and implement solutions that improve operational efficiency, system reliability, and business outcomes.
  • Assist in the development and evolution of application and system architecture, ensuring solutions align with enterprise standards, security requirements, and long-term strategic objectives.
  • Use test environments, automated testing tools, and test cases to design, prototype, validate, and improve software solutions.
  • Drive efficiencies by providing input on coding standards, development practices, tools, automation opportunities, and emerging technologies, including AI-assisted development capabilities.
  • Participate in the evaluation and implementation of modern software engineering technologies, frameworks, and AI-enabled development practices that improve productivity, quality, and maintainability.
  • Document programs, processes, procedures, technical designs, and implementation details according to department standards to communicate changes and maintain operational efficiency.
  • Lead, train, mentor, support, and develop software engineers by delegating responsibilities and providing advice, coaching, technical guidance, and educational opportunities.
  • Provide technical leadership and mentorship in the design, implementation, and responsible use of AI-enabled software solutions, including retrieval-based knowledge access, intelligent automation, agentic architecture patterns, and secure development practices.
  • Success Profile:
  • Advanced knowledge of software engineering principles, practices, methodologies, and programming languages including C#, .NET/.NET Core, SQL, LINQ, Blazor, and related technologies. Optional: Python, JavaScript, Angular experience.
  • Advanced knowledge of system design, software architecture, application integration patterns, development tools, cloud technologies, and data processing concepts, policies, practices, terminology, and procedures.
  • For web development team, must have: ASP.NET, iOS Development, Web Services (WCF, RESTful, Web API), MAUI/Xamarin, LINQ, understanding of WPF and MVVM patterns, Windows desktop, mobile and browser-based application development, web services support, Microsoft DevOps, Agile Development, iOS deployment process, GitHub, Android Development, Cloud Development, Containerized Deployment, Data Analytics and/or AI.
  • For policy administration development team, must have: .NET, COBOL, Microsoft DevOps, Git, GitHub Copilot and/or Microsoft 365 Copilot or equivalent.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to identify complex issues, evaluate alternatives, and recommend effective solutions.
  • Ability to lead technical initiatives, manage projects, facilitate collaboration across teams, and influence technical direction.
  • Strong Preference:
  • Working knowledge of AI application architecture, including large language models, vector databases, semantic search, prompt engineering, and agent-to-agent communication patterns.
  • Ability to evaluate AI technologies and recommend appropriate architectures, frameworks, implementation patterns, and governance considerations based on business and technical requirements.

Education

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, management information systems, or related field. A combination of education and/or relevant work experience may be accepted in lieu of degree.

Experience

  • Required:
  • 5+ years related progressive experience in development and systems analysis.
  • Experience working with at least 1 – 3 coding languages. (C#, and SQL preferred.)
  • Experience in project management.
  • Strong Preference:
  • Experience designing and implementing Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) solutions, including knowledge retrieval, vector search, grounding strategies, and prompt orchestration.
  • Experience architecting, developing, and supporting Model Context Protocol (MCP) servers and integrations that enable AI agents to securely access enterprise systems and data sources.
  • Experience designing, configuring, and optimizing agentic workflows using platforms such as Azure AI Foundry, Microsoft Copilot Studio, or similar AI orchestration and agent development toolsets.
  • Experience leveraging AI-assisted development methodologies and toolchains to accelerate software delivery, including code generation, testing, documentation, debugging, and solution design.
