Software Development Engineer

Role Overview

The Software Development Engineer contributes to Local Public’s Engineering team by completing front- and back-end development tasks for various types of applications and infrastructure.

Key Responsibilities and Duties

• Collaborate with in-house and external developer(s), product and project managers, UX designers and others to build, iterate/improve and manage the Local Public streaming apps-as-a-service platform
• Take ownership of large, complex projects from conception to deployment without needing close supervision
• Ensure that non-functional requirements such as security, performance, maintainability, scalability, usability, accessibility and reliability are considered when architecting solutions
• Perform technical code reviews and support for other developer(s)
• Adhere to and establish where necessary coding standards and organization
• Write clear and coherent technical documentation
• Maintain job knowledge by studying new development tools and programming techniques; participating in educational opportunities; reading professional publications; maintaining personal and professional networks; participating in professional organizations
• Assist in the development and architecture of new product ideas and strategies, recommending technical approaches (libraries, frameworks, etc.) as needed
• Learn and work in new frameworks, languages, and technologies as needed
• Keep teammates updated on task and project progress using collaboration tools (tickets, pull requests, internal communications, etc.)
• Collaborate with other team members to foster a positive and productive culture and contribute toward the overall growth of Local Public
• Be available for real-time collaboration during defined “core workday hours”
• Be proactive about asynchronous communication (Slack, email, tickets)
• Other duties, responsibilities and activities may change or be assigned at any time with or without notice

Required Skills/Abilities

• Familiarity with API development and consumption required
• Experience with NodeJS and JavaScript development required
• Understanding of GraphQL and RESTful APIs preferred
• Experience with efficient AWS and/or Google Cloud orchestration, management, and monitoring preferred
• Portfolio of digital projects required

Education and Experience

• Bachelor’s degree (in any field) or equivalent technical training or professional experience as a software engineer preferred
• Experience designing and developing enterprise digital applications, preferably in the streaming video and/or custom CMS space

Physical requirements

• Ability to view data on a computer screen for long periods of time
• Ability to regularly type on a keyboard
• Ability to work some evenings, weekends, holidays as needed
