Responsibilities

  • Build and extend Portal, Instacart's central data hub
  • Partner with data scientists, data engineers, and analysts
  • Design and ship tools for data discovery, understanding, and trust
  • Own user-facing surfaces touching the entire company
  • Improve productivity of data practitioners through self-serve tools
  • Own Portal (data discovery, lineage, metadata, data quality)
  • Own semantic layer (Medusa)
  • Own supporting systems built on dbt and Airflow
  • Lead frontend architecture and product execution on Portal
  • Contribute across the stack (Python services, data pipelines, APIs)
  • Suggest and drive new initiatives for Portal's evolution
  • Mentor other team members
  • Champion engineering excellence (frontend craft, performance, UX quality)
  • Work with other teams to understand data pain points
  • Translate pain points into self-serve and reliable solutions

Requirements

  • 7+ years of working experience in a similar field/environment
  • Self-motivation and enjoyment for a startup environment
  • Strong sense of ownership
  • Strong frontend expertise
  • Deep experience with React
  • Deep experience with TypeScript
  • Track record of shipping polished, performant product UI in a large codebase
  • Comfort working fullstack
  • Able to extend backend services (Python)
  • Able to reason about APIs, data models, and pipelines
  • Strong knowledge of SQL
  • Familiarity with common data infrastructure technologies in a production environment
  • Familiarity with Python
  • Familiarity with Airflow
  • Familiarity with Snowflake
  • Familiarity with dbt
  • Experience working with a large codebase on a cross-functional team
  • Ability to balance urgency with shipping high quality and pragmatic solutions
  • Product mindset — care about the experience your tools create

Preferred

  • Experience building internal developer tools, data tools, or other 'tools for technical users' products
  • Familiarity with data catalog, lineage, or metadata systems (e.g., Amundsen, DataHub, OpenMetadata)
  • Experience leading frontend architecture decisions or design system work
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, computer engineering, electrical engineering, OR equivalent work experience
