Responsibilities

  • Lead successful cross-team and multi-quarter multi-engineer projects
  • Move quickly to drive both existing and greenfield projects forward
  • Proactively search out ways to expand impact beyond the Jira board
  • Turn team-specific projects into opportunities to up-level the platform
  • Help build the engineering team and make Upstart a great place to work

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or related field plus 5+ years of software engineering experience
  • 3+ years of backend development using Kotlin, Java, or another OO language
  • Experience designing, building, and operating distributed systems with service-to-service APIs and event-driven architectures
  • Experience building scalable backend services processing business-critical or financial data in production
  • Experience contributing to decision engines that integrate with machine learning models
  • Experience writing production-quality code with automated testing, monitoring, and observability

Preferred

  • Experience integrating with 3rd parties or handling large data sets
  • Experience with SQL, data warehouses, or other database technologies
  • Experience designing, developing, and deploying microservices-based applications
  • Strong ownership and accountability for quality and timely delivery
  • Ability to take feedback well and grow continuously
  • Thrive in self-directed and collaborative settings
