Tulane University is seeking a highly skilled and forward-thinking Technology Architect to design, build, and evolve a modern, scalable, and secure research computing ecosystem that supports the University’s diverse and rapidly growing research community.
This role is responsible for end-to-end architecture across compute, storage, networking, platforms, cloud and software services —encompassing Windows, Linux, HPC clusters, virtualization platforms, enterprise applications, hybrid/multi-cloud environments and any associated software stack. The architect will play a critical role in translating research proposals and grant requirements into standard technical solutions and leveraged infrastructure and services where possible, including environments supporting regulated and federally funded workloads such as CMMC Level 2 (L2) compliance and GovCloud deployments. The services should be built for leveragability, scalability and economy of scale.
- Design and maintain a comprehensive research infrastructure roadmap aligned with institutional goals and research priorities.
- Lead the design and build-out of secure research platforms, including HPC clusters, data pipelines, research data platforms, and isolated computing environments.
- Design and implement GovCloud-based and hybrid secure enclaves for sponsored research workloads.
- Develop reference architectures for data-intensive, AI/ML, and regulated research workloads.
- Partner with faculty, researchers, and PIs to translate scientific and regulatory requirements into technical designs.
- Provide technical consultation during grant proposal development, including solution design and budget modeling.
- Collaborate with research administration teams to support grant lifecycle processes.
- Design and implement IAM, data encryption, secure storage, network segmentation, and zero-trust architectures.
- Design and implement secure research environments aligned with CMMC Level 2 and NIST SP 800-171.
- Partner with cybersecurity teams to maintain audit readiness and compliance.
Required Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s Degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, Engineering or a related field OR an equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
- Significant experience in systems architecture, enterprise infrastructure, platform design or related IT roles.
Preferred Qualifications
- Direct experience designing or supporting CMMC Level 2 (or equivalent NIST 800-171) compliant environments
- Experience with AWS GovCloud, Azure Government, or similar regulated cloud environments
- Familiarity with DoD research funding requirements and secure data handling practices
- Experience building secure research enclaves or regulated computing zones in higher education or federal environments
